Using BizInt Smart Charts for Patents with Delphion

BizInt Smart Charts for Patents (version 3.0 and later) can build charts from Thomson's Delphion service. All the Delphion collections are supported, but the Derwent service is not supported.

This page describes how to build a chart from Delphion and some of the particular capabilities of these charts.

Building a Chart from Delphion Data

Building a chart from Delphion is simple.

  1. From the result of a search in any authority, select the Data Extract tab.
  2. From the Select Format drop down list, choose "XML: All patents in one file".
  3. You may then choose to export either the Bibliographic fields or Full Text with Bibliographic.
  4. Press the Download button to begin the export.
  5. Your browser should ask what you want to do with the ZIP file of the results. Save the file to your disk (in a location you can remember).
  6. Then open BizInt Smart Charts for Patents and import the ZIP file (using Import on the File menu, or by dragging and dropping the file into BizInt Smart Charts. You do not need to unzip the file before importing it.

Special Capabilities with Delphion Data

Each row in the chart which comes from Delphion data has a link to the Delphion Integrated View for the corresponding document. You can launch this link in your browser by choosing "Record on Publisher Website" from the View menu (also on the right-mouse menu for the row). This same link is available in HTML exports in two places: under the row number in the chart; and, at the top of each record (if you choose to export records).
